Dupuytren contracture is a proliferative disease of the palmar fascia of the hand. Although the etiology of the disease is not completely known, it has been associated with heredity, alcoholism, liver cirrhosis, and diabetes. It most commonly occurs in men over the age of 60 years. In 10% of the patients similar changes also occur in the foot. This disorder is characterized by the development of thickened tissue in the form of subcutaneous bands, folds, and depressions on the skin of the palms. This causes a gradual bending of the affected fingers, which prevents full extension as the disease progresses.
