Tattoo removal
Reconstructive surgery
The choice of method of tattoo removal as well as its success depend on the depth of pigment penetration into the skin. If only the uppermost skin layer is pigmented, the tattoo can be removed completely (by dermabrasion or chemical peeling) and without scarring. In most cases of professionally done tattoos, accumulations of pigment can be found in all skin layers as well as in the subcutaneous tissue. Such tattoos can be removed only by complete excision and, depending on the size of the tattoo, reconstruction by one of the plastic-reconstructive surgical procedures.
