Benign breast tumor surgery

Breast surgery

The most common type of breast tumor is fibroadenoma, most often found in young women after puberty. The treatment initially comprises only regular ultrasound follow up. The tumor can disappear spontaneously, but new tumors of this kind may develop in the same or the other breast. In the case of its rapid growth and the development of atypical ductal or lobular hyperplasia, the tumor has to be surgically removed. Phyllodes tumor is much less common, and typical of older age. Characterized by rapid growth, it may reach a size of 10 to 20 cm. It requires surgical removal, together with a margin of surrounding healthy tissue. Phyllodes tumors may be benign or malignant. In the case of malignant phyllodes sarcoma, mastectomy (surgical removal of the breast) is indicated. Intraductal papilloma may develop as a single mass or numerous papillomas referred to as papillomatosis. It typically develops in young women, and its main symptom is bloody discharge from the nipple. The indicated treatment is the surgical procedure of microdochectomy. These procedures are performed under general anesthesia, and the recovery period is 7 to 10 days.
